Well done to Keith Heary from Carlow, an associate member of Slaney CC. who won Ireland’s first 24 hour cycling race, The Galeforce Cycle West Challenge on 19th and 20th of September. The gruelling 47km course was a hilly route near Clew Bay, Clare Island and Croagh Patrick, and Keith covered 10 laps -470km in 23hours 17 minutes and 29seconds. A tremendous achievement on this ultra challenging endurence event.
Thursday 24th Novice Road Race. Another great turnout for what has proved one of the most enjoyable series of events we’ve put on this year and has seen new riders get there first taste of racing and few guys who don’t normally compete get back into the racing mode. The handicaps again worked out to perfection with the scratch and novice sections all coming together in the last 500m. First three over the finish line were Frank Dunne, Luke Maguire and Paul Bolger. Results Novice section: 1st Paul Bolger, 2nd Willie Roche, 3rd Liam Ruth, 4th John Wickham. Scratch: 1st Frank Dunne, 2nd Luke Maguire, 3rd Johnny Gordon. Thanks to John Busher for the images below, as usual click on the thumbnail to enlarge.
Saturday 26th UnderAge Coaching Ride. To keep things fresh we are trying a new course and meeting point. We used the course for the finishing laps for the counties a few years ago. Its on the New Ross road using the old bypassed road and the hard shoulder on the new road. From Enniscorthy take the right hand turn for Davidstown as the New Ross road widens about 2 miles out of town and park on the left. Last week we had 10 adults and 14 underage riders and all are welcome. We’ll probably do a couple of laps with the younger riders with the older guys doing a few faster laps, sprints etc.
Sunday 27th Tour. Tour will meet as usual at the Duffry at 9.30am. We had a good spin of 75kms in fantastic weather last week so hopefully the weather will be kind again. Ken Blanche has been in touch to mention a charity cycle taking place from the Ferrycarrig Hotel to Tullow on Sunday morning. I’m sure they would like to beef up the numbers if anyone fancies riding down to meet it and then maybe going back as far as Bunclody/Kildavin with them?
