Its been very heartening to read the very sincere tributes to Sam on various websites, both locally and nationally, and on Facebook /Twitter etc. Theres hardly a racing cyclist in Ireland that hasn’t raced the Gorey 3 day at some stage. I’m sure in the years to come there will a fitting tribute made to Sams memory whether at the Gorey, Betty’s race or some new event.
In the meantime the local clubs have been considering a small gesture local cyclists could make in Sams memory. AS SERC have cancelled their race on wednesday evening in respect to Sams long association with their club it was suggested that a simple, social ride be held that evening. The proposal is 2 laps (or 1 if you prefer) of the iconic Crannford circuit from the Gorey 3 day at a Sunday tour pace so that many members, both racing and touring, young and veteran, of the Wexford clubs could be included and finishing at the Monument with a round of applause for Sam.
In addition we’d like each rider to donate a ‘sign on’ fee of €5 for the ride and all proceeds with be donated to Gorey Hospice where both Sam and Betty Darcy were cared for in great dignity. After the ride the sign on sheets with the participants names will be given to the Darcy family.
Proposal is to sign on from 6.30 at the Monument, Gorey with a 7pm sharp start. (as we’re putting this together at short notice please keep an eye on local clubs websites for any changes).
As many of us won’t get to the funeral with work committments this would be a great way to pay tribute to Sam in a way I think he would appreciate and I would appeal for a large turnout in club colours.
(If a couple of people are available to volunteer to help marshall the riders at Camolin that would be great)
