Please Note: The Underage Races on Saturday July 1st Will take place as planned in Davidstown and are NOT effected by this issue.
Due to circumstances outside the control of Slaney Cycling Club we are forced to Cancel this weekends Eddie Tobin Memorial Road Races. Races were due to be held on the Bunclody circuit this Sunday 2nd July.
We would first like to express our appreciation to all the individuals who had volunteered to marshal and support the race and to the Red Cross and race officials for their commitment to be available this Sunday.
A significant part of the race route was resurfaced this Tuesday evening just passed, resulting in excessive loose chippings remaining on the surface, which in some areas are to a depth of several centimetres. Having driven and walked the section last night and again this evening we feel it poses an unacceptable safety risk especially given the high speed section of the circuit that approaches it.
The club identified an alternative route with a diversion off and back on to the shortened course but this route too poses safety issues which could not be properly risk assessed in such a short time frame.
We are disappointed to have to cancel the race however we feel this is the best course of action in the interest of rider and public safety. We will study the calendar and consult with CI to see if the event can be run at a later stage this year.
We would like to thank all the riders and officials who have supported the event previously and we hope to see you back again soon.
Again We would like to emphasise that the underage racing on Saturday will take place as normal on our Davidstown circuit and is unaffected.
Thank you, Slaney CC
