After another hectic cycling year its time for local cyclists to take it easy for a few months and recharge the batteries before thoughts turn to the new season. Slaney CC will review the past season and look forward to the next at their AGM on November 14th.
The AGM will be held at the Riverside Park Hotel at 8.00 pm. All club members, or those interested in joining, are requested to attend. Club gear will be available on the night and we hope to have samples of the new club casual/leisure wear as well. Please arrive on time as refreshments will be served early.
The present committee have expressed their willingness to stay in place for one more year and will be putting themselves forward for re-election at the meeting. Any alternative nominations for positions on the committee or any motions to be addressed on the night should be forwarded to the club secretary well in advance of the meeting so they can be added to the agenda.
2008 was an important year for the club with our annual events such as the Mount Leinster Challenge and The Eddie Tobin Memorial Race drawing large numbers of cyclists to the town. In addition the club promoted the 10th anniversary cycle to Cork in aid of HOPE and was heavily involved along with Enniscorthy Town Council in the visit of Sean Kelly to unveil the Tour de France monument at the Duffry in July. On the same evening the club revived the tradition of a cycle race at the Strawberry Fair with a race which finished in the town centre as the fair was opened.
On the racing front the club ends the season with Frank Dunne holding his national senior 1 licence despite an illness and injury reduced season, Alex Williams, winner of the Waterford and Arklow leagues, is high in the senior 2 rankings while Murt Doyle, a Leinster silver medallist this year, ends the year as the countries highest ranked Senior 3 rider. On the touring front the Slaney jersey was seen on the roads of Lanzorote in spring, at the Pyrenees taking part in the Etape de Tour in July and over the climbs of Mont Ventoux and Alpe D’heuz in August. Closer to home club cyclists took part in the Sean Kelly tour in Dungarvan, the Wicklow 200 and other cyclo sportives and were well to the fore in the 200km ride to Cork in July. Finally on the social front don’t forget the clubs Christmas party will take place at the Riverside in December and some places are left at €55. Contact John Butler to book a place. Last years event was very enjoyable and a good time was had by all.
