Saturday Spin

Great turnout today for the Saturday Spin which rode the new 100km route of the Mount Leinster Challenge.

Thirteen cyclists, Gillian Power, Brian Maher, Peter McGowan, Mark Bowkett, Phil Skelton, Frank and Andy Shleck ( the Fortunes), Pat Whelan, David Corky O’Connell, Paddy Dunne, Murry McDonald and special guests Mick Byrne and Dave Murphy all cycled out of Aldi at 9.00am for a tough, enjoyable spin.

Weather conditions were very difficult and we crossed the Nine Stones first time around with a strong headwind, rain and temperatures of 2 deg C. This made for a very painful descent with frozen fingers all round.

We had a welcome coffee stop in Applegreen Bunclody where batteries were recharged an in spite of the conditions, the decision was made to carry on and head for the Corrabut.

Pat and Mark headed for home at this stage and a mix-up over the route resulted in Phil and Dave going their own way.

We were all reminded that the Corrabut Gap is a savage climb and legs were severely tested in spite of a favourable wind.

From there it was relatively easy and we headed for home at a steady pace. Strava confirmed a Spin of 106 km with over 1500m of climbing.

Thanks to everybody for showing up today, really good group and good craic.

Next week, weather permitting, we plan to ride the 140km route, that should be fun!!!!!
